Be Prepared: Road Trip Hacks
It’s that time again – Road Trip! Try these road trip hacks on your next journey so that you and your family are well prepared and enjoy the trip hassle free.
We’ve been on many road trips as a family but have only recently discovered what makes a road trip good and what makes a road trip not so good.
Be Prepared
Instead of packing the night before or on the day of your road trip, start organizing a week in advance. We find the large clear storage container bins helpful for this. Use one bin for food and snacks and another for bathroom and household supplies. We also pack a cooler for frozen meat, vegetables, fruit and dairy products like margarine and long-life milk. We encourage our kids to start putting their clothes that they want to take into their travel bags early. So, we avoid a last-minute rush to wash everything before the trip.
Road Trip Hacks
Following these hacks will help make your next road trip journey more smoother and more enjoyable for your family:
- Plan your route – Use GPS apps or maps to plan your route in advance. Check for traffic updates and road closures to avoid delays.
- Car maintenance – Check your vehicle’s oil, tire pressure, and fluid levels before you leave. A well-maintained car is less likely to cause delays.
- Travel during off-peak hours – Avoid rush hours and heavy traffic by planning your departure time strategically.
- Pack snacks and drinks – Bring a variety of snacks and drinks to keep everyone satisfied and hydrated. Pack them in a cooler to keep perishables fresh. If you have children, pack their snacks and drinks in lunch boxes that they can put into their backpacks and access easily on the trip.
- Emergency kit – Pack a roadside emergency kit with essentials like a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, and tools for minor repairs.
- Pack light – Minimize luggage to maximize space and reduce weight. Use packing cubes or bags to organize belongings.
- Comfort items – Bring pillows, blankets, and comfortable clothing for long drives. Adjustable seat cushions or supports can also improve comfort.
- Entertainment – Prepare playlists, audiobooks, or podcasts for entertainment. Consider downloading offline content in case of limited reception. Prepare car friendly games or activities for passengers especially children.
- Rest stops – Plan breaks every few hours to stretch, use restrooms, and refresh. Research rest areas or scenic stops ahead of time.
- Car organization – Use organizers or containers to keep items like chargers, maps, and sunglasses easily accessible. Keep the car tidy to maximize space and comfort.
- Documentation – Carry essential documents such as your driver’s license and insurance information.
- Safety first – Always prioritize safety. Use seat belts, secure children properly in car seats and obey traffic laws.
