When You’re Stuck In a Rut: 10 Practical Ways to Move Forward
We all go through seasons where life feels heavy, repetitive or uninspiring. Maybe you’ve felt it lately too. The dragging mornings, the lack of motivation or that restless feeling deep down that whispers “Something has to change.”

I’ve been there. In fact, not too long ago, I found myself completely stuck in a rut. I wasn’t just having a “bad week” or a case of the Monday blues, this went much deeper. For months, I woke up each day feeling drained, unmotivated and uninspired.
On the days I worked from home, I could manage. But the days I had to go into the office? Those became harder and harder. Even though I’ve been with the same team for nearly 10 years and genuinely enjoy aspects of my work, the spark was gone. I was craving growth, a new challenge and Yes even a higher income. But in my field, opportunities were slim and I felt like I had hit a glass ceiling.
To make matters worse, changes at work, new systems, new processes. Only added to my frustration. Instead of helping, they slowed us down and piled on more stress. My energy was slipping, my patience thinning and even my family noticed the difference.
It was during a three week holiday that the truth hit me. I felt like myself again only when I wasn’t thinking about work. The moment I returned, the stress and dread came rushing back. That was my wake up call.
Sound familiar? If you’re nodding your head right now, you’re not alone. Being stuck in a rut happens to so many of us but the good news is, you don’t have to stay there.
Instead of applying for endless roles that weren’t a good fit, I decided to shift my focus inward. To grow, to nurture myself and to take small, meaningful steps forward. Today, I want to share the 10 areas I chose to focus on. Things that helped me and can help you too climb out of the rut and start feeling alive again.
1. Move Your Body with Daily Exercise
When you’re stuck, movement is medicine. I started taking daily walks during the work week. Sometimes on my lunch break, sometimes right after work. Even 20 minutes outside helped clear my head, reduce stress and give me energy for the rest of the day. You don’t need a gym membership or fancy equipment. Just put on your shoes and go.
2. Shift Your Mindset
It’s amazing how much your thoughts shape your reality. I began challenging the negative spiral in my head by focusing on a can-do attitude. Sure, not every day goes smoothly but choosing to focus on small improvements instead of big problems made a huge difference.
3. Eat to Fuel Your Body
Our diet directly affects our mood and energy. I noticed that when I cut back on sugar, reduced caffeine and added more fruits and vegetables, I felt less sluggish. Little swaps like apple juice instead of soda or almonds instead of chips helped me stay consistent without feeling deprived.
4. Protect Your Mental Health
When life feels heavy, mental health has to be a priority. I started tracking how I was feeling day to day and gave myself permission to pause when I needed to. Taking a break, resting or even scheduling time with a counselor isn’t a weakness. It’s wisdom.
5. Stay Connected with People Who Lift You Up
When you’re stuck in a rut, it’s easy to isolate. But reaching out to friends and family helps you feel supported and less alone. Even a quick coffee date or phone call can brighten your day and remind you that you’re not in this by yourself.
6. Learn to Set Boundaries
On the flip side, too much social activity can become draining. I started planning my weekends intentionally. One weekend to catch up with friends, another for family, another for extended families and one just for rest and relaxing at home. Setting boundaries gave me balance and protected my energy.
7. Cut Back on Social Media Scrolling
Social media has its place but mindless scrolling was eating up my evenings and making me feel worse. Cutting back freed up time for more meaningful activities like reading, journaling or even just being present with my kids.
8. Prioritize Self-Care
Self care isn’t selfish. It’s essential. For me, this looked like creating a simple weekly ritual. A home spa night or day, getting my hair done or doing my nails with no interruptions. These small acts reminded me to care for myself the way I care for others.
9. Explore a Side Hustle
One of the most empowering changes I made was dedicating time each day to a side hustle. Building something of my own gave me a sense of purpose and possibility outside of my 9 to 5. It’s slow and steady progress but the dream of one day replacing my corporate income keeps me motivated.
10. Do Something Just for Joy
Lastly, I gave myself permission to enjoy life again. Whether it was watching a feel good movie, heading to the beach with my kids or simply reading a book in the sun. These little joys added light to my weeks. Sometimes, the best way to climb out of a rut is to add more fun to your days.
Final Thoughts: One Step At A Time
Being stuck in a rut is hard but it’s not permanent. You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Start small. Choose one area from this list and focus on it this week. Then, slowly build from there.
Remember, life is full of ups and downs but you always have the power to shift your perspective and take action. By moving your body, protecting your mental health, setting boundaries and making time for joy. You’ll start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
You’re not alone in this. If I can find my way forward, you can too. One step, one choice and one day at a time.
