Breaking Free from Student Loan Debt
When I first graduated, I walked across the stage with a degree in hand and over six figures in student loan debt weighing on my shoulders. You’d think I would have been stressed out, overwhelmed or panicked. But truthfully? It didn’t really bother me at the time.

Why? Because my loans were interest free. That tiny detail made me feel like I had all the time in the world to pay them off. As long as I kept making the minimum payments, I figured everything was fine. After all, student loans are “normal,” right? For years, I didn’t think twice about it. I focused on living my life, working my job and getting by. But looking back, I can see how much that debt quietly shaped my choices and how freeing it feels now that I’m finally almost done with it.
This is the story of how I went from “ignoring” my student loan balance to aggressively paying it off and why I’m so passionate about helping others realize that you don’t have to let debt control your life.

How I Used to Think of Student Loans
For the longest time, I treated my student loan like background noise. It was always there, humming away in the corner but I didn’t let it take up mental space. Since it wasn’t accruing interest, I convinced myself that there was no urgency to pay it down quickly. I’d make my minimum payment each month, shrug it off and carry on.
Deep down, I told myself things like:
- “It’s just student debt. Everyone has it.”
- “As long as I’m paying the minimum, I’m doing okay.”
- “There’s no point working extra hours, taxes will take too much of it anyway.”
If you’ve ever felt the same way, you’re not alone. Debt can feel so normal that you almost get numb to it. But what I didn’t realize at the time was how much it was actually holding me back.
The Mindset Shift: Taking Control of Our Money
Things started to change when my family and I made the decision to really take control of our money. We wanted more than just “getting by.” We wanted financial freedom, options and peace of mind. Suddenly, that student loan balance didn’t feel like background noise anymore. It felt like a heavy anchor keeping us tied down.
I realized:
- Every dollar going to my loan was a dollar not going toward our future.
- Even though it was interest free, it was still debt and I was tired of it hanging over me.
- If I wanted a different financial future, I had to make different financial choices.
This mindset shift was huge. Instead of accepting my debt as something I’d drag along for decades, I started asking “How can I get rid of this as quickly as possible?”
Why I Started Working Overtime (When I Never Used to)
For years, I avoided overtime. I saw it as pointless. Why put in all those extra hours just to have a chunk of it taken away by taxes? In my mind, the effort wasn’t worth it. But once I had a clear goal to pay off my student loan. I saw overtime differently. It wasn’t just about the paycheck anymore. It was about progress, momentum and freedom.
Every hour of overtime became another step toward reducing my balance. Suddenly, the money wasn’t “less because of taxes.” It was “more than I had before.” That perspective changed everything. I started saying Yes to as much overtime as I could manage. I had a clear vision to bring my balance under $10,000 and then wipe it out completely within a year.
The Results: From Six Figures to Nearly Free
Fast forward to today. My student loan balance is just over $3,000. In five months, I’ll be completely student loan debt free. I can’t even describe the feeling of relief that comes with seeing that balance shrink month after month. What once felt like a vague “someday” is now right around the corner. More importantly, I’ve learned that:
- Debt doesn’t have to define you.
- You’re not stuck paying for your past forever.
When you shift your mindset and get intentional, you can change your financial future.
Lessons I Learned Along the Way
If you’re on your own student loan payoff journey or thinking about starting, here are a few lessons that helped me:
1. Don’t Let “Normal” Hold You Back – Yes, student loans are common. But just because everyone has them doesn’t mean you have to keep them for life.
2. Small Steps Add Up – Whether it’s an extra $50 from a side hustle or a few hours of overtime, every bit you put toward your loans makes a difference.
3. Your Mindset Is Everything – Once I stopped seeing overtime as a “waste of time” and started seeing it as “fuel for my debt free journey,” everything shifted.
4. Celebrate the Wins – I celebrated when my balance dropped under $20K, then under $10K, then under $5K. Each milestone kept me motivated.
5. Financial Freedom Is Worth the Sacrifice – Yes, working extra hours and saying No to some things was hard. But knowing I’m months away from being free? 100% worth it.
You don’t have to do this alone and you don’t have to rely on willpower.
Seeing your progress written down can be incredibly motivating when the journey feels long.

You Can Take Control Too
If you’re feeling weighed down by student loans or any debt, I want you to know this – you don’t have to live like this forever. Your debt doesn’t have to control your choices, your future or your peace of mind. You can take control of your money, make intentional decisions and carve out the future you want. It might not be easy. It might take sacrifice. But every step you take brings you closer to freedom.
Final Thoughts
I used to think my student loan debt didn’t matter. That as long as I was paying the minimum, I was fine. But now, standing on the other side of this journey, on the 27th of February 2026. I can say with confidence that paying it off has been one of the most empowering choices I’ve ever made. With no more student loan payments, I feel lighter, freer and more hopeful about the future. And I want you to know, you can feel that too.
Take control of your money. Don’t let it control you. Your past doesn’t have to hold you back from your future. Financial freedom is possible. And trust me, it feels amazing.
